Russian River Foods

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Hi, my name is Ken Alary, the owner of Russian River Fine Foods; I have been in the culinary industry for over 20 years, and have a culinary degree from the California Culinary Academy. In the mid 90’s I was in Redwood City, California, I taught cooking classes there for two years while executive chef at Encore Performance Catering. From there I was the executive chef at the Powerhouse Brewing Co. in Sebastopol, California, and at Lisa Hemingway’s Bistro in Santa Rosa, California. In 2004, I started Russian River Fine Foods. I have always felt that “sauces are what make a meal.” They add visual appeal, while enhancing and complimenting the flavors of the food as well as increasing the complexity and enjoyment of the entire experience. I believe there will always be a demand for new food products. People’s tastes are vastly unique, and there is a desire to experience innovative flavors like Chipotle Ketchup, as well as updated traditional products like Smokey River Barbeque Sauce.

Granola Gourmet

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Founder Jeff Cohen has created a unique and much needed product that will appeal to everyone. Cohen, who has himself been a diabetic for fifteen years was frustrated while trying to find a snack that not only did not cause a spike in his blood sugar, but that also tasted good. He finally decided to create his own and Granola Gourmet was born.

Jeff used the Glycemic Index as his guide and was able to find ingredients that could make a tasty snack with a low Glycemic impact. His family experimented with the ingredients and finally created granola bars. They were able to eliminate sugar and replace it with raw blue agave and honey. Thus a tasty and healthy snack was produced.

Cohen’s family was making the bars and found that the kids were taking multiple bars to school to share with their friends who also enjoyed this new snack and a business developed. From there, Granola Gourmet got it’s true start providing Gourmet Granola Bars to the set of the ABC TV show ‘Pushing Daisies’ and in the following months the casts and crews of additional TV shows and movies tracked them down and are now enjoying these tasty treats! These ‘Bars of the Stars’ are healthy, delicious and handmade.

we want your feedback – we are learning too

Recently an email arrived in our customer service inbox regarding one of our web patrons’ concern over the polyurethane being used in the production of our 3greenmoms reusable LunchSkins. Our customer was concerned that the “polyurethane comes in contact with the food and I do not want that.” We past this email onto the folks at 3greenmoms and here was their reply:

Dear XYZ,
Thank you for your concern. We have spent a lot of time researching the most appropriate and safe option for our LunchSkins. As you know, the fabric we chose is cotton, with a polyurethane liner. It is made in Germany, and passes EU standards for food safety. This particular fabric has been used for years in Europe and the US in pastry bags. The polyurethane lining on these bags is very stable — the reason that it is food safe is because of the lack of migration into food.

We are proud to offer this high-quality product and hope that you will consider choosing LunchSkins as a great alternative to plastic.

This was a good discussion to have and we’d like to have many more as it helps us refine our approach each day. It helps us learn, teach, improve, and change, which are all tenants of our Mindful Commerce mantra. That said, we invite you to leave comments and feedback for us!

Walking Remnants Installation

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

We’ve been conceptualizing various art installs (with our interior architect) for our soon-to-be-open seven planet Oregon general store (opening 9/12/09). One thought in particular we’ve been keen on is creating certain pieces made from found objects (as pictured below). Everyday when I walk down my street in N Portland I come across all types of items like these and now working with seven planet I think to myself… what can be done with all of this stuff? Give it some thought and it can be pretty just like new.
