Out Portland Team is so excited with how successful our Supplier Saturdays are becoming. Last Saturday Grace and Ivy joined us and shared a beautiful day with us here in  Portland.  Grace and Ivy is a local health and beauty line that is completely made up of organic materials and is locally produced.  Ivette, of Grace and Ivy, brought in all her products, gave out samples and did mini hand scrubs for our customers.  Her line has continued to grow in a beautiful fashion with the latest addition of lavender baby wash and lotion.  Saturday was a great success and be sure to check our store event calendar for more upcoming Mindful Supplier Saturdays!

Ride the Bus – Enjoy the view

Evening Commute from Sam Brosnan on Vimeo.

A good friend of mine shared this video with me this morning by Sam Brosnan. I absolutely love how beautiful this piece is. The reason why I thought I’d share this with you all is well, riding the bus instead of driving to and from work is pretty green and I highly encourage everyone to make your public transit system a regular part of your commute.  So enjoy this video, prop your feet up, put this one on full-screen and enjoy the beautiful Portland scenery filmed from our very own Portland Tri-Met.

First Thursday – Recap

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Screen shot 2010-03-24 at 3.39.09 PM

First Thursday (March) was a blast! Our featured Artist of the month is Michelle Nguyen. She sketched a piece for us with the seven planet logo and a goldfish. Michelle’s work shows the technical side of illustration while encompassing the gentle brush stokes of Calligraphy and the quiet explosions of color often depicted in works of graffiti. Much of her newer works are made on recycled wood, exposing the grain, while maintaining the subtle imagery to float freely. We are exhibiting her work all month. Check it out. www.michellenguyenart.com

Our musical guest was from Italy. He goes by the name Stefano and plays classical violin. This was a real treat. The crowd gave him a standing ovation after the first song.

We welcome you to come to the next 1st Thursday celebration at seven planet as it is sure to be a great time again and again. Every month we have a new artist and musician / dj at our store on 1st Thursday starting at six o’clock pm

Alchemy Goods + Messenger Bags & More = Less Waste

Check out Alchemy Goods!

We here at seven planet love to share the stories behind our supplier and the products they make. This week I’d like to share Alchemy Goods with you.

Alchemy Goods of Seattle, Washington takes old, discarded bicycle inner tubes, mates them with seat belt straps salvaged from junkyards, and turns them into some of the coolest (and greenest) bike bags and accessories on the planet.

Alchemy Goods mission is simple: Turning useless into useful.

Alchemy is the medieval science of turning lead into gold. More generally, it means magically turning something of lesser value into something of greater value. For us, the value isn’t economical so much as ecological. We look for materials that are normally discarded that might have value with a little bit of imagination and some hard work.

Every Alchemy Goods bag purchased represents one less part of our world destroyed. That is why all our products should have the highest possible recycled content, but also be superbly functional and aesthetically pleasing.

I Especially love the idea behind the logo!

The logo intentionally looks like the periodic table. The number in the upper right hand corner represents the percent (by weight) of recycled material in the product you purchased.

Introducing- Grace & Ivy

We really need to be careful of the products we purchase and their impact on the environment. This is why we are so thrilled to share one of our newest suppliers with you, Grace & Ivy. In early 2009, Grace & Ivy founder Ivette Newport began a quest. As a new mother, she desired a healthy, organic lifestyle for her family. She started investigating the food they were consuming and the products they were using on a daily basis. She was shocked at her findings. Beauty products were the first to go once she realized how many petro-chemicals, parabens and other toxins they were laden with. Her goal was to begin crafting these bath, beauty and skin care products for her family, using organic, local ingredients. Nothing more deliciously decadent than Brown Sugar Scrub

Our Favorite Item: Brown Sugar Scrub

Mindful Supplier Saturday

mindful-saturdays

This Saturday was the first official day of Saturday Market this year and all the local supporters were out in full force. We had lots of work to do and thankfully, Pangaea Organics was our featured supplier for our “Mindful Supplier Saturday” because I really needed the caffeine.  Pangaea had the coffee brewing, the sun was out, people were smiling and the streets were buzzing.

I was so excited yesterday to see all the new boxes full of local jewelry, apparel and household goods from Trillium Artisans that we brought into the store.  Trillium Artisans is an innovative, green, nonprofit community economic development program that empowers artisans and actively connects them to markets.  I can’t wait to introduce our customers to the new items in the store. Everything is truly amazing and unique and of course, HAND MADE!

Today was a great day for Portland and thank you to all of you locals for your continued support.
Be sure to come check out our “Mindful Supplier Saturdays” where we feature a local company, artist or designer for the day.

craft-Night

What: Craft Night
Where: Seven Planet – 412  N.W. Couch St. Portland, Oregon 97209
When: Every 3rd Wednesday, 6-9pm

The Story

One day Milo and Katie met and hit it off.  They decided they should make friends together and create things together. Milo, an eager-to-learn student, is enthralled by crazy art world things. Katie, a shopgirl extraordinaire, loves to see the beautiful in simple objects. They are such busy bees, if they didn’t create together, they’d probably never see each other!

They decided, one day, to host a Craft Party at their humble Sellwood apartment, and friends attended enthusiastically. The night was filled with music, story telling, and everyone was creating fun crafty goodies! A few watercolor paintings, a handful of collages, and a plethora of googly eyes and popsicle sticks later, a tradition was born!

Katie and Milo find that entertaining for Craft Night has brought them closer together, and will continue to make new friends and create new memories by hosting the inspiring event. Craft Night at Seven Planet will be a perfect place to unwind, share with friends, and build a community that Seven Planet strives to form with all its visitors.

Come Join in the Fun!

It is this sense of sharing and human connection that Katie and Milo want to bring into Craft Night. We welcome you to join us at Seven Planet every 3rd Wednesday of every month from 6-9pm. This event is free to attend so tell a friend!
