eMarketer: Email Spam Hurts the Planet; Huge CO2 Emissions
eMarketer did an awesome article today – didn’t know bad email had such a bad effect on the planet. Here’s the article:
Who doesn’t hate spam? It clogs e-mail boxes. It clogs transmission lines. It wastes time. It wastes computer space. Everyone online thinks it’s bad, bad, bad.
And spam is not going away.
According to a Silverpop survey conducted last year, 80% of e-mail recipients felt that spam levels were either about the same or getting worse.
Now comes news that spam is not only a scourge of the virtual world, it’s bad for the real-world environment, too.
According to “The Carbon Footprint of Email Spam Report,” released by the security firm McAfee, the annual energy used to transmit, process and filter spam totals 33 billion kilowatt-hours (kwh).
That amount is equivalent to the electricity used in 2.4 million US homes—and creates the same greenhouse gas emissions as 3.1 million cars using 2 billion gallons of gasoline.

payable to bearer
Some receiving their first seven planet MAP check may wonder why they are “payable to bearer”, as that form of payment has been out of favor for quite some while.
The reason is that they are designed to promote mindful commerce…. and, accordingly, should be as freely transferable is as possible so as to accomplish perfect liberty world-wide as soon as possible within our lifetimes. seven planet is a micro-economy experiment. If you ever receive a seven planet check payable to bearer, please feel free to cash it, keep it, trade it, invest it sevenplanet companies or give it away. seven brand company, inc. – building a brand to save the planet.

team 3 update -
we are putting the last touches on the first seven planet song Monday evening and will send the CD/lyric sheet out Wednesday.
In it’s current form, the song is the seventh re-write (not intentional), it will fit within 3:07 when edited, contains all seven notes/cords, and the pass phrase, or reverse hook, is seven syllables in length. The underlying rhythm has a subtle Native American feel and the melodies are very simple. The lyrics were inspired by the seven planet logo combined with a long meditation at the ocean’s edge during a full moon.
Let us know what you think.
P.S. Merry Christmas and hope everybody thaws out soon.
LIFE IS GOOD
hot and flat
Thomas Friedman of the New York Times has done a great job of explaining why things are… well, the way they are. If you haven’t read “Hot, Flat and Crowded” yet, you should. It does a better job of explaining our business model than we ever could.
If you want to know why our tribal leaders don’t take salaries, read Benjamin Franklin’s speech of June 2, 1787 to the Federal Convention entitled “Opposition to Executive Salaries”
If you want to get inspired on how fast like-minded people can solve an issue, read this:
how fast is seven?
fast enough. part of the reason that we are “letting it happen” and not “making it happen” is that we understand the power and exponential acceleration of web 3.0. when properly motivated, communities of people join together in impressive numbers and are lightning quick in accomplishing their goals.
Here is a snapshot of our traffic…
Seven Life
seven planet™ is the world’s first chain of green general stores. It is the foremost green and sustainable marketplace for consumer-based products sold within both virtual and traditional storefronts.
At seven planet we believe that living in a more earth friendly manner is as easy as 1…2…7. Therefore, we have compiled feedback from our patrons, advisors and team on how to live a seven life. This simply means that anything that is good for the planet, our environment and resources is “seven”.
So, the seven life is simply a way of living where we collectively work to further improve our approach to how we interact with our planet.
It’s about progressing towards a more sustainable life for you, your family and your community. One step at a time to help collectively save the planet. Like anything in life change takes time and continual revisions to the way each of us approaches existing patterns. The changes we all need to make to save the planet are no different and they will take time.
However, with viable feedback and with examples of how people are living the seven life we hope to simplify the process of changing for us all. From little steps to big ones, we have a path to personally and professionally being more seven.
The seven life is simply a way of living where we collectively work to further improve our approach to how we interact with our planet. The opportunity to live a more seven life is present every day, though like all things it takes time and continual revisions to the way each of us approaches existing patterns. Here are some seven life tips for taking those initial steps towards change:
green tip #1: start carrying a bag
This a very simple and effective way in which to turn a common trip to the grocer into a sustainable activity. Simply keep one to three canvas or cloth bags in the trunk of your car or bike trailer. When you shop have your groceries or products placed in your cloth bag vs. a plastic or paper bag. In the United States, 40 billion grocery bags are used each year, 30 billion plastic and 10 billion paper bags. Currently only less than 1% of Americans bring cloth bags to the grocer. If everyone did we would save 14 million trees and 3600 million barrels of oil a year.
green tip #2: begin with the light
This is truly one of the easiest and most effective ways in which to turn a home or business into a more sustainable location. By completely replacing all existing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs you will have taken a major step towards helping save the planet. CFLs can last for as many as 7 years and utilize 1/3 the energy of traditional light bulbs. If each home in the United States simply replaced one incandescent bulb with a CFL bulb it would save the amount of carbon dioxide created by 1 million cars.
green tip #3: unplug appliances
Make it a habit to unplug all appliances when you are finished using them, it helps to reduce the amount of electricity you are using.
green tip #4: bring our own chopsticks
I eat alot of asian foods so i always have my own set of chopsticks with me. I feel if more people would do this the waste from those dispossible chopsticks would be a great impact on the planet
green tip #5: nmera lighting
Nmera Lighting is is in full development of a line of LED lighting that will replace drop ceiling fluorescent fixtures and most all the lights you see out on the street, highways, parking lots and exterior building accent lighting. This technology will save not only the planet but your wallet. Our website is coming soon and we’ll give all the lowdown there. You can contact Owen Stephens,CTO @ owen@nmeralighting.com. Thanks!
renovated historic buildings
Yes, in some ways it is more difficult to renovate a historic building than it is to build a new one. But the results can be awe-inspiring… and, of course, it is easier on the planet to “recycle a building” than to litter the landscape with a new one – no matter how “green” the new construction is. So, it is of course only fitting that our stores are slated for super-cool renovated historic buildings in super-cool sustainable communities. governor’s visit
Priest River, Idaho and the surrounding area (e.g., Sandpoint) has some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. From deep water lakes with hundreds of miles of shoreline to epic mountain ranges with unsurpassed wilderness opportunities, it is no wonder why Priest River is so popular with those who cherish the great outdoors.
Yesterday, Idaho’s Governor dubbed Priest River “Idaho’s Capitol for the Day.” He and many of his distinguished staff and collegues toured the historic downtown and seemed genuinely impressed with all of the renovation currently underway in Priest River’s historic downtown. It was www.sevenplanet.com’s honor to present the Governor with a hand-crafted picture frame built from scraps of the new www.sevenplanet.com storefront. Read the Mayor’s speech here!
seven planet seeks energy companies
seven planet is currently researching and evaluating potential mindful suppliers for their energy silo. This silo is a critical one in the long term as it will provide patrons with alternative energy and energy conservation options. Energy is also a key silo as every day we need to consume a certain amount of energy to simply get by, therefore finding viable product options to help our patrons improve the environment are very important.
